Thoughts on Doctor Who

Season 4, Episode 6, the Sontarians used a 'cordolane signal' which caused copper jacketed bullets to expand and jam the Human's guns. The guns just clicked uselessly, and then you can see them all attempting to eject and reload, quickly realizing their guns were jammed.
But... shouldn't there have been a boom if a shell was already loaded in the chamber?- (which you can hear them loading as the Sontarians come around the corner at aproximately 19 min in 'Poison Sky'). Firing pins are typically made of steel, not sure about the hammer and spring but I'm pretty sure they aren't made of copper and the cordolane signal was said to only affect copper.
The firing mechanisms should have still been working properly.
A jammed shell in the chamber should have exploded in their hands upon firing.
