The Wonders of Coconuts (LLSN! Oct 2012)

Coconuts
Fun fact: a coconut is a 'drupe' not a 'nut'.
(A drupe is a fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a hardened shell (pit) that contains the seed. Other examples of drupes are peaches, plums and cherries)

Coconut Oil: this stuff is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. It contains 3 potent antibacterial fatty acids: lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid.

Great for your skin!
-good for shaving (doesn't irritate skin, lubricates well, close shave)
-great moisterizer (and the smell doesnt linger)
-good for sunburn, skin rashes, bug bites (anti-itch), small cuts and scrapes..
-removes eye make-up (even waterproof mascara)
-can be used as toothpaste* (anti-bacterial, remember?), and hair conditioner (works wonders on split ends).
*To make homemade oil toothpaste you just combine equal parts coconut oil, baking soda and water

Great for cooking!!
Stands up pretty well to high heat: great for baking, good for frying.

Coconut Water: the only known natural substance that can be injected into the bloodstream because it is sterile and has the same electrolyte balance as our blood. During World War II, coconut water was injected into the veins of soldiers when medics were out of blood plasma.

Great for hydration
Coconut water is a natural isotonic beverage- it has a high concentration of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous and calcium).
"Potassium helps your heart function and helps regulate your blood pressure, keeping
it at lower levels during peak performance. This helps your body temperature stay
lower, which in turn, will help you retain more fluids. As a result, it will help you stay
more hydrated, staving off headaches and cramping.
One 8.5 ounce serving has more potassium than two and a half bananas and has 15
times more potassium than other leading sports drinks on the market. In theory, you
could say that coconut water rehydrates you 15 times better than any other sports
drink on the market."- http://www.everynutrient.com/coconut-water-health-benefits-nutrition-facts-and-history.html
