'Let's Learn Something New' (Jan 2012)

Survival lesson numero uno!
Making fire with no matches.

Youve probably heard of a few of the ways to make a spark through FRICTION; rolling a stick between your hands, using a bow with the string twisted once around the stick, ect. ('How to')

Then theres the sunlight FOCUS method; as long as you have sunlight, you can use a magnifying glass, camera lens, eyeglass lens, binocular lens, balloon, plastic bag, or plastic glove filled with water to focus the light on the tinder. You can even use a chunk of ice! (details at the Art of Manliness link below).
Another method that follows the same idea of focusing light is using a soda can, you really only need the bottom, and poloshing it with chocolate, toothpaste, or probably any other paste abrasive.
If you happen to have steel wool, you can rub the contacts of a 9 volt battery against the stretched out wool, too, and it should start to burn.

Heres a good long list of methods to start a fire, with clear pictures and explanations: Art of Manliness.

Survival lesson numero dos!

How to build a shelter in the wild.
Howstuffworks puts together a list of great ideas here.

I'll even throw in a bonus, numero tres!
